As the construction industry accelerates its transition toward electrification, converting diesel excavators to electric power is becoming an increasingly practical solution. However, both battery-electric and cable-powered excavators have their own limitations.

 

Battery-electric excavators offer excellent mobility and are not restricted by power cables, but their operating time is limited by battery capacity. Cable-powered excavators, meanwhile, can operate continuously as long as grid power is available, but their working range is restricted by cable length. A new approach combines the advantages of both systems: battery power + cable power.

 

Under normal conditions at a fixed jobsite, the excavator operates in cable-powered mode, reducing energy costs and eliminating concerns about battery depletion. When the machine needs to move beyond the cable's working range, it can switch to battery mode for flexible relocation and short-distance travel. Once back in the working area, it can reconnect to the power supply and resume cable operation.

 

The conversion typically involves replacing the diesel powertrain with an electric motor and controller, while installing a battery pack in the original counterweight area. For a typical 20-ton excavator, energy consumption can be significantly reduced compared with diesel operation.

 

More importantly, this dual-power configuration does not require an oversized battery, helping control conversion costs while maintaining operational flexibility.

 

There is no one-size-fits-all solution for electric conversion. The ideal configuration depends on the machine, working environment, operating hours, and mobility requirements. The goal is simple: lower operating costs, easier maintenance, and more efficient construction.
